It’s been a long while since I’ve quit playing Minecraft, but this server popped up in my mind while reminiscing. Not sure if this is even the right place to do AMAs or if people that would remember me are even around still, but I guess I’ll give it a shot.

If you’re newer here, as the title says I’m Azzy, but I previously went by Azur0n and shiny. I started playing back in 2012 and stuck around until 2014 or 2015. I got 3rd in SWC ‘13; that’s kinda cool I guess.

If you’re an old face say hi and ask a question if you have any. If you’re newer you’re still welcome to ask anything as long as it’s not about the game currently!

Hi.

I'm also offline most of the time but nice to see that you're not dead. Kinda strange how I opened the forums after months and saw this post.

Hey,

It’s been well over a week since this was posted so I’m not sure if you’ll read this or get round to replying but I’ll give it a shot anyway.

I played on the old SL back in 2012 and on Multicube — mainly in 2013 and early 2014, before slowly losing interest and moving onto
other things. I seem to remember you as one of (if not the?) best spleefers of the time and someone with a distinct and aggressive style of play. I just came to check this forum today to see how the server was doing and was amazed to see you posting here after all these years. I guess my question would be, what’s your story? How did you discover spleefleague? How did you learn to play, develop your style and become one of the greats? What do you remember as some of your favourite moments? What led you to quit? I know this is very broad for an AMA but no one else is asking anything so I may as well.

Hiya! I don't recall ever seeing your name, but it's still cool to see one of the older players around. I'm just counting down the days before I go back to college at this point, so I'm still checking in on here even though there doesn't seem to be many people frequenting this place nowadays. I'm pretty much going to be going down memory lane and spewing everything out, so this might be a long read - we'll see.

As for my story, I'm pretty sure I found this server on the Minecraft forums back in 2012. I had seen people play Spleef before, and I thought a little online competition would be fun. I was pretty bad at the start, but since I was in middle school at the time, I had all the time in the world to grind points to make it into SWC for that year. I wasn't optimistic at all since I was set to play Black9x, one of the more highly regarded players at the time. I might have taken a couple points off him, but either way I went out at 49th going 0-2. For some reason that I can't remember now, a spot opened up in the losers' bracket, and I somehow managed to get back in the tourney through that. I think I took one match there, but then took my third loss in a double elimination bracket. That's probably more impressive than my performance in the World Cup that year.

Playing with Squatman99 and Morgan in that era of the server inspired me to get better, but my (and many others') profound hate for camping drove me to develop the more aggressive, fast-paced style I was known for at the time. As a kid, I just found doing 360s really fun, so I added that to my rushdown playstyle. It ended up being the easiest way to farm up points, so again, with the insane amount of time on my hands, I had a lot of practice dissecting defensive patterns and learning how to safely autopilot when I was just running at people. It's pretty funny how I came to enjoy playing against the best defensive players (knusper77 and Blazeon stick out to me right now) more than aggressive players. That can probably be attributed to pretty much being unmatched at running at people which resulted in me turning my brain off. I still hated hardcore campers though.

I was fairly confident going into SWC '13 after putting a ton of time into the game. At this point, I had reached my peak, and I felt like I had a free bracket to Winners' Finals (random seeding sucks btw). This tournament was one of my two favorite moments I had playing the game (the other was playing with a certain team on another PvP server). I played a couple friends for my first two rounds and nearly got sent to losers in my round 1 match since I was playing pretty bad that day. Winners' Finals with Squat was one of the more memorable matches I had on the server, but the quick win I had in Winners' Semis vs Eteto and my throw to him in Losers' Finals also stick out to me. I really felt like Squat and I were the best 2 at the time and that I could've won in Grands in the rematch.

My desire to play dwindled from that point on as high school came around. I felt like at least one person thought I was the best in the world at the time, so I couldn't complain all that much. I ended up spending more and more time on OCN, that other server I mentioned earlier. I still followed through with playing in SWC '14, but I didn't expect to make it far. I think I went 1-2 there? After that performance, I completely moved over to OCN. I'm not sure if Spleef just started to favor more defensive playstyles, if I just really sucked after my break, or if it was some combination of the two, but I didn't have as much fun with it as I did in '12 and '13. I still stopped by once in a blue moon to see if people still played after the Multicube era. In 2016, I moved on from Minecraft to Overwatch ranked for a short while, but I eventually ended up just playing Smash Melee in my free time. I pretty much only play Melee and Ultimate now, but I play Overwatch with friends every few months when I'm home from college.

I generally look back on Minecraft with hate, mostly for my toxic middle school self, but SL in 2012-2013 is something I look back on fondly.

EDIT: Oh, guess this has to be checked over by a mod, probably for length. That's cool.

@Azzy might get more responses if you ask the discord, forums kinda died
I figured pretty much no one comes around here these days, but I still check in just in case.

As for Discord, I just don’t think it’s proper for an AMA, even if it does result in more responses. Thanks for the suggestion anyway though.
